International Women’s Day event in Croydon puts gender on the agenda!

14 March 2017

International Women’s Day was celebrated in style by over 100 residents at a joint event hosted by us and Viridian Housing on Saturday (11 March).

Held at Grosvenor House in High Street, Croydon, the celebration included inspirational speakers, world music and dance, workshops, complementary therapies, arts and crafts, food, and comedy.

The event recognised the achievements of women and highlighted the importance of continuing to break down discrimination and achieve gender parity.

The day, attended by women and men of all ages, was hosted by Angie Le Mar, a multi award winning comedian and businesswoman.

Women’s Rights Activist Laura Dodsworth spoke to the audience about her book ‘Bare Reality’. The book features 100 women who bravely shared un-airbrushed photographs of their breasts alongside honest, courageous, powerful and humorous stories about their breasts and their lives.

British life peer and community activist Baroness Pola Uddin also delivered a passionate speech about ‘breaking glass ceilings’ and her determination to open doors for other women.

Headline act Family Atlantica Quartet then closed the day with their upbeat sounds which had the audience on their feet.

Jodie Stanley, Resident Involvement Lead at Viridian, said: “The event was about celebrating the achievements of women and we were delighted that so many residents, both female and male, joined us for this.

We were all truly inspired by the talks, workshops and performances on the day. I hope it has encouraged more to be bold and do their bit to champion gender equality.”

Alma Haq, Resident Involvement Manager at AmicusHorizon, said: “International Women’s Day asked people to #BeBoldForChange and I’m proud we did our bit to put ‘gender on the agenda’.

The message was clear – that each of us can take small steps to achieve big differences!

I’d like to thank all the acts who took part. And a special thank you to AmicusHorizon and Viridian residents and staff for making this such a fantastic event.”
